Hello All (Ian Sorensen especially)
I've just been looking at the transcription of All the Dead, which
appeared on the website yesterday. It works very well, only I come to a
grinding halt at the end of each second line (know what I mean, etc..) The
F9 indicated here really has to be an F7, or maybe F7/9 otherwise the
harmony becomes very static.
That's all..

Subject: MV589 re MV584, MV588
A word of thanks to Steve (or possibly Pete) for adding the guitar
fingerings to the transcriptions for me - I'm a keyboard only chap.
And this is probably why Pete has had to add 9ths to my chords - on a
keyboard 9ths usually get added to a chord by the melody line so I tend to
to miss them out. The next one I send in will be scutinised for hidden
ninths with a fine tooth clavinova...
I've had "No Dice" ready to go for ages but now I'll have to do it all
again just in case it is infested with those pesky ninths. Must set some
traps.
At the risk of being burned at the stake for blasphemy, I have to say that
Pete's suggestion of a Db in place of an E in "King at Nightfall" is more
than perverse. It's just plain wrong. I know he's the tritone kid, but
really! The transistion jars just a bit too much - E is a much more natural
bridge between G and Am.
Alright, I'll go quietly. Just rip off my epaulettes, break my sword but
don't, please don't, scratch my records.
Ian Sorensen
PS Gerry - how come you missed that 13th? hee hee :)

Could Gerry elaborate on why he thinks "Road of Silk" is about a dying G.I. in
Vietnam? This is a new one for me.
I only ever got to see Pete twice on stage both times during the Live Libel
period. He was very funny and entertaining between songs and while performing
the LL ones. But his songs, like Kingsley Amis's novels (and poetry come to
that), are basically serious and there aren't so many funny ones outside LL.
There's plenty of wit, of course but the implications of BOTBS, for example,
are pretty black.

Subject: MV591: Buxton Opera House, September 20th 1998
A word on our plans for the follow-up to Monyash 97.
When Carole polled the Voices last year (MV57) on their preferences, she
indicated we were looking at alternatives to the folk festival / marquee
setting. Well, we're going for a concert event at the 'Theatre in the
Hills', the famous Buxton Opera House. The evening of Sunday 20th September
is reserved, and Pete has confirmed he will do it.
http://www.buxton-opera.co.uk/
Not much else decided yet. Monyash wants to hold another folk festival this
year, and what we'd like to do is time that for the same weekend, so those
who wish to could visit the folk event on the Saturday and Pete's concert
on the Sunday. Don't know yet whether that will be possible. We may also be
able to get Brent Mason again as support, but need to confirm the date with
him.
Julie has expressed interest in appearing again, but probably won't commit
until the last moment. Clive might be tempted to show, should he be in the
UK at the time, but again I don't think we could guarantee anything. So
we'll probably bill the event as 'Pete Atkin and Friends', and keep our
fingers crossed.
We're also playing with the idea of a small number of premium 'golden
circle' tickets inviting the bearer to backstage drinks afterwards. We'd
probably give MV members first refusal on most of these.
So this is by way of saying 'keep September 20th free'!

Great news about the concert but....if only it was a week later I would
have a holiday weekend and not have to find a way to get back from Buxton
to Glasgow before work on Monday morning. Having said that, you can be sure
I'll be there!
I would be particularly intersted in seeing Clive turn up if he was wearing
his famous clogs from the 70's. Oh well, we can dream.

Consider it done!!
A quick update on My Rock Follies site to sneak in !!
New pictures added late yesterday - quite a few more of Julie
Covington as Dee.
Xoom have messed around with their addresses again but fortunately
Steve had the right link on the jc page ( I had to find my own site
from there !! )
The new, hopefully for good, address is:-
http://members.xoom.com/Follies ( /home.html if you want to go
direct to the main contents )
See you all in Buxton? So what *is* the secret MV sign going to be? A
Gold Ring around the neck? It's lovely, but it doesn't mean a thing.
And now for my 'Cat' signature - shame it looks run over on the MV
archives - you did warn me didn't you Steve :-(

Yup, that's the address. Not so sure 'bout the name, though ...
Thank you Chris for this generous service. The back orders we have for NTSC videos
will be shipped as soon as we get the tapes -- as with the PAL ones not
everyone expressing an intention to buy followed up with an order, so we will
have 2 or 3 spare NTSC copies available, and quite a few PAL (UK standard) tapes.
Thank you also everyone who has supported us by buying the tapes and CDs so far!

I suppose the Sign of the Rider to the World's End wouldn't be much good,
would it?
If there's anyone in London who's still looking for the See For Miles
reissue, Tower Records in Piccadilly Circus have 3 copies on order - they
should be in later this week (they told me last night). Just leave one for
me!

"...this fictional account of the day-by-day life of an English gamekeeper is
still of considerable interest to outdoor-minded readers, as it contains many
passages on pheasant raising...and other chores and duties of the professional
gamekeeper. Unfortunately, one is obliged to wade through many pages of
extraneous material in order to discover and savour these sidelights on the
management of a Midland shooting estate, and in this reviewer's opinion the
book cannot take the place of J.R. Miller's 'Practical Gamekeeper'."

-- Excellent news! The Opera House is a beautiful old theatre and a great venue
(and, for us at least, has the added benefit of being about 30 minutes down the
road). The date is in our diary...

In reverse chronological order:
Re MV601: Gigs (Gerry)
Fear not! Pete fully intends to put some more gigs into his calendar
between now and September. He tells me he's working on a few ideas, though
nothing is fixed up yet. Thank you (and others) for the suggestions of
suitable venues -- Pete has a note of these too and I'm sure he's
considering the possibilities.
Re MV590; MV585: The Road of Silk
My version of the persona is dying of old age, and his fading memories hint
at a childhood and youth not too far removed (geographically) from Clive's
own.
Re MV589; MV588; MV584: Chord Transcriptions and 'Why Bother?' (Ian, Ian
and Gerry)
The chord symbols were Pete's input. I think it's a great help to have the
particular inversion and fingering that works for him, rather than just the
generic chord name, especially with the more obscure ones. So I'm always
glad to GIF out the symbol and incorporate it. Pete's been off line now for
rather longer than planned with the commissioning of a new computer, so
hasn't read any MV posts since December 9th, but he should be back any day
now and I hope he will be able to comment on your remarks re (objections to)
the Db and E9. And Ian: please DO bother ...
Re MV580: Passports and poems (Hamilton)
Yes, I went through that too with "Other Passports". Clive's approach to
lyrics is distinctly different from the way he tackles poems. Not just the
structure, which is and needs to be different, as has already been
discussed here at length, or the detail of phrase and image, where the same
voice can be heard in both poem and song, but something about the way the
phrases and imagery seem to hang together and create something bigger,
deeper. But I'm out of my depth.
Re MV566: Yahoo (Dave Jones)
Thanks for the entry, Dave. Never thought to go for the 'classic rock'
classification, but if it's good enough for Billy Joel ...
We have registered the site in various music-related indexes over the
months, as well as with the major search engines. It all helps!
Re MV562; MV561: Rats!
Looks like nobody caught the Steve Wright show on tape. Even Pete missed
hearing it!
Re MV538; MV592: NTSC video
The standards-converted copies are very good -- they don't seem to have
lost much resolution in the process (well, 250 lines in, 250 lines out, you
might say) or picked up any perceptible noise. All orders received have now
been met (please let me know if you think otherwise -- also anyone with a
Disc 2 disagreeing with their CD player, and which should have been
replaced but hasn't). The left-right balance is influenced by the fact that
the (hastily rigged) stereo audience mic is off-centre, and in order to
avoid Pete's image shifting during the two numbers where ambience is
maintained throughout the song, there had to be a compromise in the mix
between 'clean' and 'ambient' centring. (But Chris, if the tape
speed/running time issue meant you bought E180s first please let me know --
we need to reimburse you for them!)

A local radio station airs old (1940's) CBS radio programs late-night.
Driving home two nights ago, they played a half-hour dramatisation of "Kitty
Foyle", based on the book by Christopher Morley. It was a fairly mundane
story, not very well done, but I have since done a web search and found out
that Ginger Rogers won an oscar for the title role of the movie in 1940.
