Dear Friends
We now have the RealMedia server up and running on the RWT domain, and to
celebrate I've bunged some more clips up on the Website:
http://www.rwt.co.uk/audio.htm
Didn't get all I wanted processed and uploaded -- the 'greyed-out' ones
should follow in a week or so.

Subject: MV885: Ponderings
Just been having another look at the Discography pages whilst on my
way to the new sound files and a couple of things caught my brain.
On WTML I noticed Phil Atkin on drums. Brother I presume? Was he
involved in the music business or just guest for the day?
Who did the sleeve designs? They are all very different, except of
course Secret Drinker and Rider to the worlds end where the sun came
out! Who came up with the general ideas and how much control did Pete
and Clive have over the final result?
Just pondering, and now back to the music.

Isn't it time we compiled the definitive PA Top 20? If everyone votes for his

to some stimulating discussion. What do the rest of you think? Who wants to
start?

Ian - top idea!
The first six or seven select themselves (well they do for me) but after that
I'm looking forward to arguing with myself over the relative merits of melody
versus content versus rhyme versus structure versus arrangement versus...
And what better excuse to get out the old vinyl albums and go through all of
them one more time?
(Mind you, I'm willing to bet here and now that nothing gets in from Live
Libel - any takers?)

This was easy! Just pick any 10 and they're as good as any other....
1. Girl on a Train
2. Faded Mansion on the Hill
3. Lady of the Day
4. Errant Knight
5. Sunlight Gate
6. Flowers and the Wine
7. Perfect Moments
8. Thief in the Night
9. Sessionman's Blues
10 30 Year man
Yep, one from Live Libel made it into the list - I admire Errant Knight for
being very sad and funny at the same time.

4. Senior Citizens
5. Perfect Moments
6. The Hypertension Kid
7. Black Funk Rex
8. History and Geography
9. Beware of the Beautiful Stranger
10. Secret Drinker
I see that I've only included one track from AKAN, one from BOTBS, one from
DTMA and one from LL while there are three from an unrecorded studio album
which is a bit illogical but just see how difficult it is to do, the problem
being, of course, what to leave out. I suspect that others' efforts will be
more BOTBS heavy.
Over to the rest of you.

Thanks Richard and Pete (Smith) for your Top Ten and Top One respectively. How
about the next nine, Pete?!
We now have a Top 13 because of a deadheat for Tenth place but no doubt this
will sort itself out soon.
Here it is!
1. Faded Mansion On The Hill 20pts
2. Perfect Moments 17pts
3. Canoe 16pts
4. Wristwatch For A Drummer 15pts
5. Hypertension Kid 14pts
6. Thief In The Night 13pts

8. History And Geography 11pts
9. Girl On A Train 10pts
Search And Destroy 10pts
Ballad Of An Upstairs Window 10pts
Practical Man 10pts
Errant Knight 10pts
Comments:
1. I have to say I expected one song in particular to dominate the Top Ten
right from the start but it's not even in the Top 20. Any guesses as to the
song I mean?
2. 27 different songs have been submitted so far, proof of the amazing quality
of PA's and CJ's work.
3. It would be nice to have PA's own personal Top Ten but I suppose we shall
never know it. Tant pis...
Next, please!

Can only ever be a moment, a scalar snapshot of something always shifting.
Too complex to step outside of (no accessible dimensions left) for an
overview but how else to rank meaning against personal meaningfulness, the
musically-stimulated emotions against lyrical nostalgia, all the things
that contribute to appeal, preference? Looking too hard for a pattern, for
analysis rather than just an impression. Shouldn't even try to pursue it I

I have just found a faded mansion on a hill down the road from my little
village, and guess what...the ideal subject of a wristwatch for a drummer has
just bought it and moved in........
that means we can now have a local group consisting of Alvin Stardust, Gary
Brooker, Eric Clapton and Ringo!!

Rapping? How about a rap version of Ballad of An Upstairs Window -
now there's an idea, a particularly stupid one I'd have to admit.. What d'ya
think Alexis? (that being your top one)

Subject: MV923 Re: MV886: Buxton Concert / Top 20
I bought our tickets yesterday. I cannot remember when I looked forward to
an event with greater anticipation. As it was Monyash 97 was the
culmination of a 20 year old desire. I was born and brought up in South
Africa. As a fan of the Beatles and Bob Dylan I thought I had a deep
interest in Rock's lyrics (more naive than deep as it turned out) so CJ's
series of articles on the subject in Cream magazine caught my attention in
a big way. I must have read them hundreds of times. I know that he has
since dismissed them as "ponderous" but I still value them as much as any
of his criticism which is saying a lot. I still have them and would gladly
make them available to other MV's if appropriate permission can be
obtained.
It was only from the mention of CJ's name in Dave Gelly's review in Cream
of DTMA that I became aware of the existence of Pete. I subsequently
managed to get all Pete's records and the possibility of seeing him live
was not the least of our reasons for settling in the UK in 1977.
Unfortunately he had packed up by that time so Monyash was the first
opportunity we had to see Pete perform in any medium. What a thrill it
was! Pete together with Randy Newman are the only real passions from my
love affair with rock music to survive beyond 1980.
My top 20 songs are;
The Hypertension Kid
The Flowers and the Wine
Thief in the Night
The Shadow and the Widower
Beware of the Beautiful Stranger
Girl on the Train
Senior Citizens
A King at Nightfall (I had always thought of it in historical terms but it
amazes me how this song anticipates, in all its essential details, the last
days of Ceausescu)
Rider to the Worlds End
Have you got a Biro I can Borrow?
Perfect Moments
Faded Mansion on the Hill
Payday Evenings
Laughing Boy
Tonight your Love is Over
Between Us There is Nothing
Screen Freak
Rain Wheels
I See the Joker
Why? ( My choice from Live Libel mainly because I still take childish
delight in the joke about eating the stick)
I must add our thanks to Steve and Carol for making all this possible. I
am sure it is hard work and takes time they can ill afford to spare. I
especially appreciate the concerts and the CD re-release, lets hope more
will follow.

have a Top Ten as follows:
1. Faded Mansion on the Hill 65pts
2. Perfect Moments 57pts
3. Girl On A Train 44pts
4. Thirty Year Man 42pts

Comments:
1. Thirty Year Man had only one vote until suddenly it leapt in at Number 4. I
thought it would be everyone's Number 1.
2. Only one vote for Screen Freak so far!!!
3. Zero votes for Touch Has A Memory, Frangipani(sp?), Luck Of The Draw, Biro,
Honky Tonk Night Train Blues, Wall Of Death, My Egoist, Lady Lowness, Rain
Wheels, National Steel, Nothing Left To Say, Time And Time Again or Little
Sammy Speedball. It can only be that not too many Voices have heard Secret
Drinker.
4. 54 different songs submitted so far.
Who's next?

You're all absolutely right: it's virtually impossible to limit oneself to
ten. But here's my attempt:
1. Girl on the train
2. Ballad of an upstairs window
3. Beware of the Beautiful Stranger
4. I used to see him far too often
5. The beautiful changes
6. Thirty year man
7. Laughing Boy
8. Rider to the world's end
9. What am I supposed to do
10. All I ever did
But what about: I need new words, Duet, You Can't Expect to be Remembered.
The flowers and the wine, ...

Hang on, Martin ...
Surely "I used to see him far too often" and "What am I supposed to do"
count as two votes for the same song!
