MIDNIGHT VOICES INDEX

MV500

created January 2000 by Andy Love

(WordPerfect File)

This is a trial index to the first 500 postings to the Midnight Voices discussion group. If a sufficient number of MVs report usefulness and/or interest, I’ll do some more!

The index should not be thought of as complete - even within the 500 limit. I’ve not indexed exhaustively but I think I’ve picked up the most interesting themes and facts, as well as some trivia. Please do say if you disagree with my terminology or choices of headings or subjects : enough persuasion and I’ll change them to suit. At the moment, headings are in a constant state of flux because I’m making my authority list up as I go along. Filing is word-by-word but can be changed very easily if required. Main Headings are always shown as bold type.

The index looks a little ‘reference-heavy’ in places - this is a function of its small size, not just me padding it out!  Again, if you fail to find an entry term which you think would be appropriate, let me know.

I’m working on consistency of subheadings. At any rate, all subheadings are capitalised - whether they’re consistent or not! - to help navigation.  Sub-subheadings are in lower case except for proper names.  Also, I wanted to find a way of linking specific questions to relevant answers, which is why you’ll sometimes see a heading + ? (to indicate someone’s asked a question) and then the heading repeated +! (to indicate replies to that question). The use of an exclamation mark does NOT necessarily indicate that the answer was positive!!  Second questions on a subject are given two question marks (with the relevant answers given two exclamation marks). I’d like to know if you find this useful or just plain irritating!

MV numbers are listed in ascending numerical order. However, the nature of some postings (which can ramble over a range of subjects) led me to examine them more closely. A whole number, then,  indicates that virtually the whole posting referred-to concerns the subject. If it’s a decimal fraction, the bit after the decimal point indicates the paragraph you should look for. Paragraph-counting is not an accurate science, again because of the structure of some messages, but I’ve ignored text repeated from previous postings. At least, where ‘messy’ postings are concerned, it should be a good enough guide to get you to the right spot quickly.

There are a few annotations which I attach to MV numbers, the most important being ‘(ult)’ which means the target is the last paragraph of the message referred-to. Some examples of MV references should make things clearer:

Gigs, Reviews, Charlbury 1997, set list 135

[points you at the whole of MV135]

Ballad Of An Upstairs Window, Composition Date 303.5

[points you at the fifth paragraph of MV305]

Prince Of Aquitaine, Lyrics, theme, drug smuggling? 468(ult)

[points you at the last paragraph of MV468]

Pete Atkin, Interviews, reports, Doctor Rock 1997 489(3ult)

[points you at the third-last paragraph of MV489]

Here beginneth MV500 : I await your comments and criticisms!
