Title: Problem with 'new' notification?
Post by Secret Drinker on Today at 10:01
I've noticed that I often enter a section (forum) of MV which is not highlighted as having anything new in it (by the biggish red 'MV' image on the home page), but when I enter the forum I can see several threads highlighted as 'new' (with the small red image 'new.gif'). When I look at these supposedly new threads there appears to be nothing in them I haven't seen before, and all the messages in the thread bear 'old' dates - sometimes the latest posting in such a thread being several weeks ago. I conclude that somehow the 'newness' of the thread is being reset wrongly. Is this a known problem - has anyone else experienced it?

Cheers

Paul

I believe the 'new' flag for each board (forum) is reset only when you call that board's index. If you've followed a different route, for instance if you've kept up to date with a board by jumping direct into its threads from the 'most recent posts' lists, the board as a whole remains 'unvisited'. It's a feature. :)

Thanks for the reply, Steve, but I'm not 100% convinced yet! I nearly always go into a board from the home page, by clicking on the board itself instead of looking at the 'most recent posts' list (although I admit I've used the latter a few times - but I do mean a very small number - I don't often look at the list at all). Until recently I thought the 'new' flagging was working perfectly OK, but now I find that it seems a bit suspect.

Just now, to get here, I went to the MV home page, and nothing was highlighted on that (i.e. the 'MV' images were all blue) indicating there was nothing new to look at (ignoring the 'recent posts' list). I entered this board anyway, and there are several threads highlighted by the red 'new.gif' image, some of which have latest posts from a while back, which I'm pretty certain I've read. (Of course your response above was also correctly highlighted as new, too.)

So it seems that sometimes I'm not always being told of new threads on the home page (again, ignoring the recent posts list); and sometimes old threads are re-marked as new for no obvious reason (to me, anyway).

It's not a big problem, but something seems to have happened recently to make the old/new indications a bit less reliable than they were before. I thought I'd mention it - maybe it's something that's happened at my end though?

Cheers

There definitely seems to be a problem - I've just come onto the 'Tech' list and found the bottom 10 threads marked as 'new' - even though the last post was months ago. It's easy to ignore them though!

This is a different issue: the user logs on the server expire after 90 days, so old threads will become 'new'. You can easily reset these using the "Mark all posts as read" option on the board index page.

However, since this seems to be causing concern, I'll increase the log lifetime to 365 days, with effect from today -- can't apply it retrospectively.
