Title: Eagelton on James.

Don’t you just love it when an academic, and a socialist academic at that, remembers that he's part of the ruling elite and forgets to be academically rigorous?

I'd say that cheap shots hardly come any cheaper than this one from Terry Eagleton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Eagleton) in yesterday's New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/22/magazine/22wwlnQ4.t.html?_r=1&ref=magazine&oref=slogin )

You are generally described as England’s best-known literary critic. Where does that leave Clive James, whose essay collection, “Cultural Amnesia,” was just published amid great fanfare in New York? I don’t really think he is a literary critic, although he is very clever.

Do you disapprove of the way he treats high culture and pop culture with equal seriousness? Not at all. My chair is in cultural studies. But that’s not the same as running off on chat shows.

And that response comes from your close reading of  Cultural Amnesia, or the Slate extracts from it,  does it, Terry?

A bit cheeky. Probably thought he could get away with it in New York. (Incidently, my chair is in the kitchen but I don't make a big deal of it.)
