Title: MV gigs - post here
Post by Secret Drinker on Today at 09:29
I hope I'm not breaking any rules by posting this, but it occurred to me that some MVs might have their own gigs they could publicise to others here, especially if there's any kind of a PA connection. So if anyone has any gigs in future, maybe they could post them in this thread. (I'm assuming of course that there will be no conflict with any future PA or Shrinks gigs, and any posting of events to clash with those would be frowned upon  >:(  )

With that in mind, to get the ball rolling, I'm doing a support slot at Baldock Folk Club tonight - the main guest is the excellent Chris Smyth (http://www.chrissmyth.com). I intend to include a PA/CJ song in my set. Proceedings start at 8:30pm, and the club is at the Orange Tree pub in Baldock, Herts - see here (http://www.questor-cp.co.uk/madnanny/mad.htm) for directions (you'll need to scroll down to find the directions to the club lower down the page).

If any MVs do come along, please make yourself known and say hello!

Cheers

Paul

Another blatant gig plug: As most if not all of you are aware, this Thursday 25th Jan is Burns night, and Tam Lin (the band I'm in) will be doing a gig at the Lord Roberts (pub) in the Market Square, Sandy, Beds SG19 1HT (map here (http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=517345&y=249232&z=0&sv=SG19+1HT&st=2&pc=SG19+1HT&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf)).

We will be performing from 7:30 onwards (entry is free).

The evening will naturally have a Scottish theme so I can't promise any PA songs this time (unless anyone can think of any PA/CJ songs that would fit the bill? Suggestions invited!)  :)

To attract people in, there will be free haggis - how can you resist?  ;D

If any MVs should happen to come along, please come and say hello - I'll be the bloke without the kilt (ooerr, missus! Don't worry, I will have trousers on).

Cheers

Paul

p.s. I hope this is OK to plug gigs here? No-one's said otherwise yet!

Be careful what you say about Charles Edward Louis John Casimir Silvester Maria Stuart - Michael Marra wrote a song about Culloden and the Prince's followers and it got him a death threat delivered before a concert!  Seriously.

Funnily enough, Leslie, that was the first (and so far, only) idea that occurred to me when I posted this morning  :)

But following Colin's timely warning, maybe not (thanks, Colin!)  :-/

But I think any death threats I get will be more to do with my singing than the lyrical content  :D

It could well indeed but isn't there a more universal theme in there somewhere? What that theme might be I leave to you to figure out. The song stands up perfectly well in itself but I have always felt that ( as with other classics from the canon) I was missing out on a reference somewhere. (I know the title comes from an Eliot poem which would imply that there's a bit more to it than meets the eye.

Blatant Gig Plug (BGP) no. 3 - I will be doing the support slot with my musical other half (and fellow band member) Alan at Baldock & Letchworth Folk Club this Wednesday at 8:30 (at the Orange Tree pub in Baldock - see the first post in this thread above for directions, etc.). If any MVs have nothing better to do, please come along and say hello. A bit short notice, but owing to a communications error, I only found out last night. I can't promise a PA song, depending on how it goes, but we'll see...  :)

The main act is The Dealers (http://www.myspace.com/withthedealers), a duo from Kent, whom I haven't seen before.

(Come on MVs, let's see some of your gigs here - I didn't intend this thread to be just for me!)

Cheers

Title: A bit of nepotism
Post by Richard Bleksley on 15.02.07 at 14:02
What follows is a shameless plug, and nepotism too.

Not exactly a gig, and not exactly MV either, but at least MV related - related to me, that is, and I'm an MV...

Over on the Music board, Secret Drinker said:

"I wish I had more time to look around Myspace properly - I'm sure there must be loads of brilliant artists lurking in there, just waiting to be discovered..."

...like (ahem) my son Dan (the guitar man) and his musical partner Vanessa, who perform under the name of Diefenbaker (after the Mountie's wolf in Due South, but don't ask me why). I don't know if their music is very MV-friendly (though, as the recent poll showed, we have all sorts here), but that doesn't seem to be one of their major concerns.

They are at
http://www.myspace.com/diefenbaker

Among the samples, Long Way Home is, in my paternal opinion, the best showcase for Dan's guitar playing.

Just thought I'd mention it...

BGP4 follows - if you don't want to know, look away now.

Tomorrow night (Sat 3rd March) Tam Lin (the band I'm in) will be performing at the King's Arms pub, (near the river at 24 St. Marys Street, Bedford, MK42 0AS), starting at 8:30 pm. There are four of us (me on guitar/vocals, two fiddlers and another guy on vocals and percussion), and we do a variety of traditional and contemporary material, instrumental (tunes from Ireland, Scotland, France and even England) and vocal, including the odd PA/CJ song - perhaps I should have said 'occasional' there  ;)

It's free entry, so if anyone stops by, please say hello (so far no MV has done so, but I'll keep trying... you never know!)   :)

Now then, I also have another one (just me on my own this time, without the band) next Wednesday (7th) but that one's an all-ticket event and it's sold out...

...pause for gasps of amazement...   ;D

...but I can't take the credit for that, I'm afraid! I'll be supporting American folk singer Julie Felix, for her gig at Baldock Folk Club (she's currently on tour here). I expect many of you are old enough (like me) to remember her from the Frost Report, etc. back in then 1960s. Anyway, wish me luck - I'll need it  :o

Cheers

I seem to recall that some Rock Festival or other back in the Sixties, she asked for requests and some bright spark shouted "Toad!" which rather put a stop to that. But don't worry, Paul, you'll blow her offstage as long as you don't ask for requests.

Well, it went pretty well, I'm glad to say! Julie was excellent, and seeing her took me right back to the 1960s. She still does some of the old protest songs, with her version of Blowing in the Wind rewritten with mentions of Bush, Blair etc. But she does a lot more, including some Spanish Mexican and Cuban songs. She's a lovely person too, and it was a pleasure to meet her - she was kind enough to thank me publicly for my set. Sorry, just had to mention it - something to add to my 'folk cv' alongside Pete!  :)

I had Laughing Boy on the setlist but I'm afraid I ran out of time - I'll put it at the top of the list for next time  :)

I'm very hesitant about publicising my next gig here - because it's on Thursday June 21, when of course the main event for MVs is in Bristol !!
Having said that, Londoners heading for Pete's gig in the evening but still in the capital in the afternoon should be able to Tube it round to Paddington in time for a train that will get them there in time once my gig is over (or you could nip out of my gig early to be on the safe side - I shan't object !).

So here goes:

The song recital, part of Exhibition Road Music Day - a free music festival,   takes place in the library of the Goethe-Institut, 50 Princes Gate, Exhibition Road, South Kensington SW7 (nearest Tube - South Kensington) at 4pm; ends at 4.45pm.

My pianist will be the superb Stephen Rose, whom those of you at PoD04 will have heard as my accompanist.

In the concert, entitled "Was für ein Lied ?... ", Stephen and I explore how, in different ways - Hugo Wolf as a miniaturist, Gustav Mahler as a symphonist, these two Vienna contemporaries developed the German Lied to new levels of intense personal expression, under the influence particularly of Richard Wagner and Robert Schumann.

The concert's title, which translates as "What sort of song? ..." is taken from a piece that is central to Wolf's Italienisches Liederbuch ("Italian Songbook") - Was für ein Lied soll dir gesungen werden? ("What sort of song should be sung to you ?")

There's more on the Goethe-Institut's website, under the Arts section - then go to "Exhibition Road Music Day 2007" and "Classical Music in the Library".

Thanks !

That's extremely kind of you, Kevin !

I know that all MVs who are able to do so will be off to Bristol on June 21 to enjoy Pete's gig - and no doubt to share fond memories of Paul, after his tragic loss.

But it would be great to see anyone who's unable to get to Bristol (and anyone prepared to dash round to Paddington to get the train from London after my gig) at the Goethe-Institut in South Kensington for the recital of Wolf and Mahler songs at 4pm.

I don't want to get ahead of myself - but it's probably best to turn up fairly pronto as when we performed there last year the (admittedly small) room was packed.

Exhibition Road Music Day also includes a fantastic array of other musical events - many of them at the institute. And it's all free.

Thanks again, Kevin, and best to all,
Naomi

Your Musical Moderator will be playing a mercifully brief solo set as well as a slightly longer one with his late band The Safe Sextet who had the good sense to sack him (i.e. last year.) This will be an outdoor gig in the singer's garden in Montreuil just outside Paris and as ever the neighbours are praying for rain. I realise it's a bit late for any Voices who are based in the States or Australia and would like to fly in but for any Parisian-based Voices whose private lives are so sad that any form of entertainment is welcome, come along to Rue Camélimat around 17.00 with a bottle of something serious.

Doing another one on the 30th with a jazz group whom I've never actually met let alone rehearsed with. Attendance at this is free but will involve swimming across the Seine to attend unless I give you a pass.

Click here to see what happened the first time we played there. You have been warned.

The Wolf song from which my forthcoming recital Was für ein Lied?.. takes its name is such a moving statement of the wonder of songwriting that I thought I would reproduce the words here for MVs.
(The English translation is taken from Lois Phillips's invaluable book Lieder line by line. The song is from the Italian Songbook - Wolf's settings of Paul Heyse's German translations of Italian poems):

What kind of song can I sing that is worthy of you ?
Wherever can I find it ?
I should most like to dig it from deep in the earth, as yet unsung by any creature;
a song that no man or woman ever heard or sung until today
- not even the very oldest.

To hear the extraordinarily touching music with which Wolf communicated those words, buy one of the many CDs available (pref one on which  Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is the baritone !) ... or come along to the Goethe-Institut at 4pm on Thursday (if you're not already on your way to Bristol to hear Pete !!)

Thanks,
Naomi

It would be unwise to asume that an artist's work reflects his own personal preoccupations. After all, Clive can't play the piano but he shows great empathy with pianist in "Thirty Year Man"... ;-)

Speaking of which I forgot to say that I plan to perform a PA song with the jazz quartet before who I will be performing the role of the young girl singer. With a bit of luck it will be recorded on video for posterity (or wherever else you might like to put it) and may even get on to You Tube if I can find someone who has the technical competence. I shan't reveal the song in question but I feel confident you'll recognise it even after I've finished with it.

Well, the gig took place but was unrecorded so the world will never know (apart from the small part of it actually present) that the song was "Touch Has A Memory," a song that has always fascinated me for various reasons. The gig was an interesting experience from which I drew two slight but considerable lessons. The first one is that it's all very well being the headlining act but if it means you don't go on till 2.00 in the morning, you find that not only the audience has left but several members of the band who were supposed to be backing you have gone with them. The second lesson is never to appear after the refreshments have been served. Despite this I managed to perform THAM accompanied by a jazz pianist and his alto sax-playing brother (whom I did not out-play) and who were absolutely breathtakingly good despite being respectively a mere 22 and 19 years old and had never heard the song in question. There they were ripping through the choruses (it went on for quite a while) while I watched gobsmacked. We did it in 12/8 time with a few phrasing modifications and a coda which descended from C to Bb to Ab to finish (more or less simultaneously) on Gb.

I said above that this song has always fascinated me: when I saw Pete do a folk club in Bristol back in the 70's he did this song as a third encore but at around the same time had left it off the re-released BoTBS album for "Be Careful..." So what did he really feel about it? Was it one of those songs that you can't not do but at the same time you can never do in just the way you want? I have heard a version where Pete just does it in 12/8 or 6/8 accompanied only by his guitar.

If I'd examined the programme more carefully, I'd have realised that unlikely that a event which ended at midnight  would have a programme that ended some time earlier, and that there was indeed something rather odd about the event's use of logos that had 2007 on them.

Yes - it is last year's- I just wanted something to link to for Naomi in a blog post.

I am so grateful to Rob for taking the trouble to provide a link from his blog - and to Kevin for offering me a free plug (albeit for something that happened last year!). It was very kind of you both, and I do apologise for the slight confusion caused ...

The fault is mine: I should long ago have set up a website ... which Rob could have used as the link. Most people (at least, those who do not know what a dinosaur I am) react with open-mouthed incredulity to a semi-pro singer such as myself having - in 2008, forsooth - no music on the web and no website. This will be added to my "to-do" list.  :-/

Incidentally, re Exhibition Road Music Day 2008: I am still hoping to be able to participate - and will post any details as and when I have them.

All best wishes and grateful thanks, again,
Naomi

Naomi - I'm sure we are all looking forward to seeing/ hearing you on myspace, or similar. Please move it to the top of your to-do list. I envisage  a show linking Entartete Musik with Cultural Amnesia...

Many thanks, Rob - will get on to that !

In the meantime, I hope that some of you who will be in the West London area on Thursday May 8 might be able to come to a fundraising concert that I am currently planning for that night (7.30pm).

The concert is being presented by the Giles Hart Solidarity Memorial Committee, with the Polish Social and Cultural Association (POSK), at the Jazz Cafe of the POSK centre in Hammersmith (238-246 King St, W6 - nearest Tube, Ravenscourt Park).

The aim is to raise funds for a memorial plaque in tribute to Giles Hart, a human rights campaigner who, at the age of 55, was among those killed in the July 7 London bombings. As you may have read in news reports and obituaries back in 2005, Giles had been a leading member of the Polish Solidarity Campaign, the main British non-party organisation that in the 1980s campaigned to encourage support for the Soviet bloc's first free trade union, Solidarnosc. Now Solidarnosc wants to show its gratitude for his work through a memorial plaque in London - and Giles's old colleagues from PSC (including me) have set up a committee that is arranging this and raising funds.

I will be joined in this performance by several talented young musicians - and the varied repertoire will range from Mozart arias through Chopin piano pieces to Noël Coward songs.

To save on administrative costs, we are asking people to pay on the door (£10 each) after reserving tickets in advance. The e-mail address for ticket reservations will be announced with our big publicity push in April. In the meantime, I'd be grateful if anyone considering coming along could send me a private message.

Very many thanks indeed for allowing me to publicise this event here,
Naomi

I'm planning to do a floor-spot at Walthamstow Folk Club this Sunday April 20 - not an Atkin/James number, mind you; and in any case I would not expect people to turn up just to hear me do one song.

But the act on the bill that night - now, they are worth hearing !! The veteran blues guitarist Simon Prager and the harmonica-player Rob Mason are both fantastic musicians, and make a dynamic duo, and it should be a very enjoyable evening.

As those who heard Pete at the club last year will confirm, it's a very nice venue.

And while I'm here, chaps, may I remind you about the fundraising concert that I'm doing in West London on Thursday May 8 (see above).

Many thanks for allowing this off-topic plug,
Naomi

See you on May 12 for Pete's gig, folks - in the meantime, may I remind you about the gig that I am doing this Thursday May 8 at the Polish Centre that's known as POSK (in the Jazz Cafe there) 238-246, King St, Hammersmith at 7.30pm.

The concert is being presented by the Giles Hart Solidarity Memorial Committee, with POSK, to raise funds for a memorial stone in tribute to Giles Hart, a human rights campaigner who was among those killed in the London bombings of July 7, 2005. Back in the 1980s, Giles was among Britain's leading pro-Solidarnosc campaigners - and the plaque, to be unveiled this July, will express the gratitude of Solidarnosc for his efforts.

As well as me, the performers include a superb baritone called Maciek O'Shea, and our repertoire ranges from operatic arias to cabaret. We'll also be joined by Katharine Blake, founder of the Mediaeval Baebes.

Tickets are £10 - cash or cheques, on the door. (Reservations can be made via a private message to me.)

Many thanks,
Naomi

Hello folks,

Here's a gig that you won't want to miss: the excellent Sarah Moule - who you will have heard duetting with Pete on his new CD - is appearing at the Pizza Express Jazz Club in Soho (Dean Street) this Sunday evening, May 18, with Simon Wallace (piano), Mark Hodgson (bass) and Paul Robinson (drums). Proceedings begin at 7.30pm. It's one of the best jazz venues in London.

Having been fortunate enough to hear Sarah's set at Pete's recent Wavendon gig, I'd be in the audience in Soho myself this Sunday if I didn't have a work-shift then !

The Pizza Express Jazz Club website says that Sarah will perform "tracks from her outstanding new CD, ‘A Lazy Kind Of Love’ (Red Ram Records), which features insightful and incisive lyrics by the likes of Clive James and Julie Burchill".

With any luck, you'll hear Sarah's intriguing interpretation of "The Flowers and the Wine".

Although you can of course book online or over the phone or on the door for £17, if you contact Sarah beforehand, you'll get in for a nicely discounted £10.

For this reduced rate, please contact Sarah, preferably by 4pm on Saturday - or by Sunday lunchtime at the latest. Her e-mail address is:  smoule@btinternet.com

Hello all,

To celebrate the 80th anniversary this year of the epoch-making premiere* of Die Dreigroschenoper (The Threepenny Opera), by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, I have devised a Weill-Brecht concert called Threepenny Songs, which I'll be performing in Central London in the early evening of Tuesday December 2, with Stephen Rose at the piano.

I do hope that fellow MVs might be able to come along. Those who heard me sing at PoD in 2004 will recall Stephen's superb playing.

The concert, at Schott Music Ltd, 48 Great Marlborough St, London, W1 (near Oxford Circus Tube station), starts at 6.30pm. It will last about an hour.

Tickets, at the door (no advance booking): £7 (£5 concessions).

Hope to see you there !

Naomi Hyamson (mezzo-chanteuse)

Will there be any other MVs there?

Very many thanks, Leslie, that's great - see you there ! Hope you'll join us for a drink afterwards.

Am not sure if any other MVs (apart from me) will be there.

Toi. toi (as we operatic types say) for tonight in Hastings, Gerry - and thanks for those very kind words. Would love to hear you play sometime, too.

Can I just say what a pleasure it was to hear Naomi performing at Schott Music last week. Until a few years ago I thought that Mack the Knife was (only) a swing hit by Frank Sinatra and my newly-found appreciation of Brech/Weill is in no small measure thanks to hearing Naomi perform on several occasions.

Also attending was the inestimable Ms Sarah Moule and she hinted at a possible SM/PA collaboration in the new future. I look forward to more information from our Diety.

Many thanks for coming along, Leslie - and for those very kind words. And many apologies for not posting sooner to say so.
Four gigs later, in three weeks (incidentally, those gigs weren't public events, otherwise I would have plugged them here) - I have finally surfaced !

It was a delight, too, to see Sarah at Threepenny Songs - and, like Leslie, I will be eagerly looking out/listening out for the project with Mr A at which she hinted.

Incidentally, unless it is ruled otherwise, I am considering the gathering of the three of us to have been a sclonch.

So pleased to have contributed to your new-found appreciation of the work of Weill and Brecht, Leslie ! I would recommend the original 1930 recordings that Teldec made available again in recent years, in which the voice of the young Lotte Lenya is heard, "sweet, high, light, dangerous, cool, with the radiance of the crescent moon", to quote a 1935 article by Ernst Bloch on The Threepenny Opera.

I  am doing a Lieder recital in Central London on Saturday June 20 at 6.30pm which I hope will interest MVs.

The venue is Schott Music, 48, Great Marlborough St, London W1 - where Leslie and Sarah kindly came along to hear me sing Weill/Brecht last year.
Admission (on the door) is £7  (£5 concessions).

Nearest Tube is Oxford Circus.

I have devised a programme called Son of the Muses: settings of the poetry of J.W. von Goethe and Heinrich Heine by Franz Schubert - and also by other composers including Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Felix Mendelssohn and 20th-century figures such as Hanns Eisler.  I'll be accompanied by the superb pianist Stephen Rose (who earned your plaudits when we appeared together at PoD in 2004).

The title is derived from Schubert's song of that name (a Goethe setting), Der Musensohn.

Later in the summer we'll be performing the programme for a gathering of the Schubert Institute, and the Schott date will be its first outing ! So it would be great if some pals could come along to the "premiere" !

Many thanks for allowing me to advertise it here !

Reminder: my "Son of the Muses" song recital is this evening (details above). I hope some MVs can get there.
The words of the great Tom Lehrer come to mind:
"As someone once remarked to Schubert - take me to your lieder."

At the Goethe-Institut London, in South Kensington, for the free music festival Exhibition Road Music Day, the pianist Stephen Rose and I will be performing Threepenny Songs - the celebration of Brecht and Weill's The Threepenny Opera which I devised back in 2008, and which Leslie M and Sarah M kindly attended when we performed it at Schott Music that December.

The programme of songs by Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler (with words by Bertolt Brecht - except that one song has words by Erich Kästner) will be largely the same as on that occasion - although this time I will be singing The Ballad of Mack the Knife (last time Stephen played it as a piano solo) and we will include Eisler's The Ballad of Marie Sanders.

The venue: Goethe-Institut London (in the library), 50 Princes Gate, London SW7 (S Kensington Tube)
Date and time: Sunday June 20, 3pm.
It's free ! There are many musical events - of many genres - that day at the Goethe-Institut and indeed all down Exhibition Road.

Here are the links, and NB - the pic of Stephen and me was taken at PoD04 by Mr Kelly (to whom many thanks !)

and

It would be very nice to see some fellow MVs there.
