Title: Naomi Hyamson plays two shows Post by Seán Kelly on Today at 20:08 Those who were at PoD last year will remember the stir caused by Mezzo Soprano Naomi Hyamson and might like to know that she is playing two shows at the Rosemary Branch Theatre in Islington - 22nd March and 4th April 2005. The shows are a celebration of Stephen Sondheim's 75th Brithday and as such will not feature any PA/CJ songs - but still sound like they will be mighty fine events. Naomi will be accompanied by Jenny Gould on piano - Jenny is Naomi's musical director and a composer of musical theatre. Apparently Stephen Rose will not appear, despite what it says in the brochure. I know all this because it turns out that (blush) one of my pictures of Naomi at PoD is being used in the new Rosemary Branch brochure - you can download a pdf of it at http://www.rosemarybranch.co.uk/theatre.htm A sclonch anyone? |

Title: Great Stuff from Naomi Post by Seán Kelly on 05.04.05 at 23:02 The smallest sclonch (in case you don't know this is Andy Love's name for an MV gathering) in known history (ie me and Leslie Moss) witnessed an excellent show by Naomi Hyamson last night - dedicated to Stephen Sondheim's 75th Birthday - a really well paced performance of songs by Sondheim as well as those who influenced him and in turn those he influenced - including one song by the excellent pianist and musical director for the night Jenny Gould. Leslie and I were most impressed. Naomi performed a number of songs that we had heard at POD and very good it was to hear them again - Leslie commented that she was in particularly fine form last night - as if we had seen her often - but really no-one could possibly have disagreed. No PA/CJ stuff of course but a great night out - oh yes and birthday cake too for the audience to finish off - nice touch. Naomi hopes to be back at the Rosemary Branch before long - we certainly recommend you get there if you can! Seán (okay I need to get my son to change the photo on the left - in the meantime think greyer and with beard :) Actually I discovered last night that I look quite like Stephen Sondheim if I bouff my hair up a bit - I pointed this out to Leslie - who replied "yes but without the talent" - Thanks Leslie! |

Anyone who loves the combination of Clive's love of language and Pete's uncliched chord progressions would love Naomi's choice of Sondheim and friends. She'd previewed several of the songs at PoD, including the wonderful Amor, which must have stretched singer and pianist to their limit to keep the timing on track. A great set by a great singer/pianist combination and it was a pleasure to be able to share in very intimate event - perhaps 60 people packed into a tiny theatre and the opportunity to chat over coffee with Naomi and Jenny. Oh, and her programme notes included Midnight Voices amongst her thank yous. Leslie |

I'm so glad that you enjoyed it. We did, too - because the audience was so fab and shared our enthusiasm for those wonderful songs. The MV sclonch may have been rather smallish in quantity, but it was of extremely high quality; and it was great to be able to chat with Seán and Leslie in the bar afterwards. Many thanks indeed to all Midnight Voices for publicising the gig in the Forum, and especially to Seán for letting us use the pic he took at PoD last November in the theatre's brochure. Right, here goes: On Tuesday July 19 at 1pm, I will be giving a free concert with, on piano, Stephen Rose - who was my excellent accompanist at PoD - at the City Lit adult education institute in Central London as part of their series of lunchtime recitals by students. It will finish by 2pm. Latecomers will be admitted (and early departers allowed to leave!) It's another celebration of Stephen Sondheim at 75, and most of the songs we'll be doing also appeared in my evening show "Send in the Clowns" (which Seán and Leslie saw); but it is not another performance of that show. The repertoire is not yet finalised (yes, I know the concert is only six weeks away!) but will definitely include songs by Sondheim, Bernstein and Rodgers & Hammerstein. There won't be any Atkin/James songs, I'm afraid. I am (with their kind permission) hoping to perform some PA/CJ songs again in the near future. The venue is the Recital Room, Ground Floor, City Lit, Keeley St, London WC2. It's off Kingsway, the nearest Tube being Holborn and Covent Garden. (NB: the City Lit has moved, so don't go to the old building, which is in another street.) No advance booking - just turn up. It would be great to see some fellow MVs there. Remember, it's free! Will be over by 2pm. Nearest Tube is Holborn. It's a celebration of Stephen Sondheim at 75 - songs by Sondheim, Bernstein, Rodgers and others. But the audience were great, and the place was full. Someone even arrived during the last song (interpreting "latecomers admitted" very literally, but I'm certainly not complaining!) Given that Midvodia seems to have gone rather quiet, may I presume further on Mr Birkill's good nature and indeed that of the MVs at large, and get in an early plug for my debut at Des de Moor's cabaret club Pirate Jenny's, which is to take place on the evening of this Tuesday November 15? I first saw Pete in performance at Pirate Jenny's (back in 2001), so I'll be walking in illustrious footsteps. Mind you, and NB, Pirate Jenny's now operates in Central London - at the Drill Hall, which I think is in Chenies St WC1 (no longer at the Vortex). With Jenny Gould on piano, I'll be singing some Stephen Sondheim songs, and also numbers by Sondheim's contemporaries, by those who have influenced him and by those whom he has influenced - in another celebration of the great man's 75th birthday. Much of the repertoire will be different to what you heard me do at PoD last year, I should point out ! For instance, we plan to do some songs by Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock. For the second half of the evening, Des de Moor is planning to revive his much-acclaimed re-interpretations of David Bowie songs, with Russell Churney on piano. As far as I know, at the time of writing, booking is not yet open; nor do I have the kick-off time or the ticket prices - but maybe anyone interested in coming along to the gig could pencil it in their diaries provisionally ! What will interest Midnight Voices is that our ICA gig is to include that gem from the Atkin/James songbook, "An Empty Table". Clive has very kindly made a small change to his lyrics to enable me to sing the song (otherwise the first-person in the song is male) - and I am of course immensely grateful to both Pete and Clive for this. Jenny and I will be doing a 20-minute set of London-themed songs as part of an afternoon-long event on Saturday September 17 in the bar of the ICA. The event, which is also to include discussion and film, is entitled "London through the eyes of Londoners". The ICA website has details. As well as the PA/CJ song, Jenny and I will be performing songs by Coward, Debussy, George Gershwin, and Lerner and Loewe. There were about twenty-five people there at any one time with lots of comings and goings. It was a bit of a noisy venue for what was essentially a spoken word event : outside traffic (sadly no sirens, Sean!) ; people ordering and receiving food and drinks ; an absurdly badly-behaved coffee machine that went Ssshhhoooooooshhhh every few minutes ; and the buzz of conversation from the cafe area below the gallery. Nevertheless... In the first half of the surrounding show - which was entirely London-centric: three novellists and/or poets gave entertaining accounts of what London meant to them; a documentary-maker posed thought-provoking questions about the benefits of the Olympics to a city; a cabbie with a huge talent for engaging an audience had a rant about bollards and other unnecessarily-expensive street furniture; and an actress called Hattie did something perfectly unintelligible. There was a slight pause then while Jenny Gould set up her keyboard and Naomi distributed copies of a commentary (very like the PoD one) to accompany her songs. Also during this interval I had the honour of being joined by none other than SJB, pausing briefly between Korea and Canada and in good form. I had to nip out for a quick aconsitutional but was rather nonplussed to be told that I had to pay £1.50 to get back in. This was particularly galling because Steve was guarding my that-much-worth of beer (half-a-pint, bloody criminal etc.) upstairs. After all my protestations were resolutely rebuffed, I again tried mumbling 'e-mail...performer' and, whaddya know? Perhaps we could have a competition to see how many places we can blag ourselves into by claiming receipt of an e-mail from an unspecified person? Midvodian NH sang six songs in a rather stunning jacket and was received very well indeed. Some of her lowest notes tended to be drowned out in the general hubbub, though. The sixth song was 'Empty Table'. Jenny had got her part exactly right - did she have a score from PA (and, if so, can I have a copy?!) - and Naomi was as commanding as we now know her to be, working the song really well. And suddenly it was over and done. I didn't stay for the second part of proceedings, opting for a (very) quick stroll round bits of the National Gallery and a walk up to Camden Town via Foyles and the Tottenham Court Road gadget shops. Refuelled in Camden and then back on the train - in which I sat next to somebody vaguely famous. So Mr. Drinker, Sir : do you have any further questions, perchance? ;) Best to all Andy |

Actually, it has nothing to do with the Arsenal: I just wanted to get your attention. I'm shortly to give a free song-recital (yes, free) in London with the wonderful pianist Stephen Rose, whom many of you saw accompany me in my set at PoD in 2004. No Atkin/James songs this time, I'm afraid, but I hope Midvodians, with their love of words and of words-in-music, will be interested: to celebrate the work of Heinrich Heine, who died 150 years ago this year, and of Bertolt Brecht, who died 50 years ago, we have put together a programme of settings of said writers by composers such as Schubert, Schumann, Liszt, Weill and Eisler. The title of the programme - reflecting the long exile of both men from their German homeland - is "Landscape of Exile". It's taken from Brecht's poem of that name, set by Eisler as part of his "Hollywood Songbook". I'm hugely grateful to have been invited to give this recital at the Goethe Institute, the German cultural centre, which is indeed presenting a number of events as part of Exhibition Road Music Day - Wednesday June 21. This is itself part of an international music festival, and several other organisations in the Exhibition Road area (South Kensington) are also taking part. So if you come along to our gig, you should find other events to interest you too. We are on at 4.15pm (till about 5pm), and the address of the Goethe Institute is 50 Princes Gate, South Kensington, SW7. No need to book... Craving your indulgence of this free plug, Mr Birkill ... !! I hope some MVs might be able to get there - although I of course realise that most people have to work in the afternoon !
