Title: MV Meeting (Herts, Beds, Bucks, Mddx)
Post by JtJ on Today at 20:55
Hi there!

That Leslie Moss and I have been speaking together (and with others at PoD04) and have decided to ask for expressions of interest in the concept of a meeting for MVs around and about Herts, Beds, Bucks and Mddx.

(We invite others in other parts of the country/planet to do the same, of course).

Some time ago now, we did actually manage such a meeting.  I believe it was in Wheathampsted (but that is not important).

The proposed meeting would conform to the following suggested rules:

1.  No one talks about the meeting.
2.  Ignore Rule 1 when appropriate.
3.  Attendence at the meeting is entirely optional.
4.  We'd meet somewhere where alcohol, soft drinks and beverages were all available.
5.  The location of the meeting would be roughly central to those coming.
6.  We can talk about anything we like at the meeting.
(Particularly the people that don't come :))

If we need an excuse:  Let it be Christmas.
If we need a timescale:  Let it be before then.

Any takers?

Hi Chorus

And me, please, Sclonchmaster!

Some may remember that we had a go at creating regional 'sclonches' (Carole's word) three or four years back.  In the light of evidence from PoD, it would be good to hear of any similar initiatives in the Midlands, North or South West.

Cheers

As one of the original Herts/Beds/Bucks schlonchees, and given that a leaking water cylinder kept me away from PoD last week  :'(, I'd be grateful for any MV fix that I can get.  So count me in.

Anyone know which particular area of this site deals with refunds?  ;)

Hi there!

Well....there we are.
We have 6 expresions of interest.
Quite enough for a sclonch.
(Not sure I've spelt that rite).  Yes! I have!

And if anyone else wants to come....that's Ok too.

I'll do some triangulations and get back soon about a possible location.
Then we'll need some local knowledge about a venue....and, of course, a date.

Ah....the power of the Internet once again.

Does anybody have any questions?  ;D

Hi there!

Triangulations complete.
Sorry it took so long.

I have been checking your member profiles (including Leslie's, of course).
[ "Secret Drinker"'s is helpfully labelled:  "England" ].

And....
Optimum location seems to be:

Hemel Hempstead!  Well fancy that!
Actually, an indeterminate point just North of HH in fact.

If everyone is prepared to travel in that direction, perhaps I can suss out a venue?
Now....
All we need is someone from HH who has local knowledge of, er....locals.

Any volunteers?

"Yes, ME, my Captain!"

Thank you, Julian!

I'll get back to you....
But, in the meantime, any feedback at all on the above more than welcome.

Here comes the Smiley....
:-*

Julian, Hemel or thereabouts sounds particularly good. If it's midweek, then I should be able to work out of our Hemel office for the afternoon, andf if it's a weekend then it's only a 45 minute drive from home.

Suggest we involve a meal in this somewhere. Speaking as a non-beer and sparing wine drinker I won't manage an entire evening limited to liquid refreshment.

Leslie

Well, it's where I live, innit? I put that there when I was trying to be Secret, but Steve blew my cover (uncoveted of course) ;-)

(The 2005 GBG lists no pubs in HH, unfortunately. I don't know if it's near enough, but the Hollybush at Redbourn sounds a good possibility - does any of the sclonchers know it? It does food and has a restaurant area too. Further details available should they be required.)  8)

Hi there!

(We'll have to wait and see what others think, of course, but....)

I have myself been to the Hollybush.  It has parking, loads of room and is (fairly easy) to find.  Quite pleasant inside too.  The kind of pub where a gentleman can hear himself think.  At least it was a short time ago.

Probably have chrome chairs and an Internet Juke Box by now?!  ;-)

I was assuming that this would be a midweek event.
Unless (any of) you think different?

Stone me....if we were running the world, we'd have things sorted in no time at all.

Hi!

The White Lion in Apsley on the old A41 was in the 2003 GBG (haven't got the current edition).  There's also The Saracens Head in Kings Langley about a mile nearer the M25 on the same road.  Not been in either but The Saracens Head is more attractive from the outside.  Neither listed 'music' as a feature.

There's also a pub at Water End about a mile north of Hemel on the Leighton Buzzard road.

Can't remember what's in Hemel old town centre.

I could reconnoitre these if you wish.

Midweek is fine by me, if we can agree on a date that suits everyone.

The Hollybush sounds very nice from the description in the GBG (I don't have it to hand now, but if anyone wants more info I can provide it later). Meanwhile, here's a nice photo (http://www.redbourn.org.uk/twiki/pub/Redbourn/ChurchEnd/hollybush1.jpg) of it. And here's a webpage (http://www.redbourn.org.uk/twiki/bin/view/Redbourn/TheHollyBush) with a bit more about it.

Hi HBBM Sclonch

Regrettably I'd probably not be able to attend a midweek Sclonch. I work until 8pm Monday to Thursday inclusive - although that may change in a couple of months' time - and am free on alternate weekends only.

But please don't let that influence your collective decision if a midweek meet is otherwise favourite.

Cheers

Title: Sclonch Summary....
Post by JtJ on 15.11.04 at 12:19
Hi there!

Time for a Summary then....

We have 8 expressions of interest, some with riders, as follows:

Secret Drinker
JtJ
Colin Crooks
Andy Love
(not available midweek)
El Greko  (away from 14/12/2004)
Richard Whiting
Leslie Moss
Theo Clarke

I think it would be a great shame if Andy Love couldn't be there.
Shall we try a Saturday or Sunday evening?

If we do, it would have to be....

Saturday 27 November
Sunday 28 November  (difficult for JtJ)
Saturday 4 December
Sunday 5 December  (difficult for JtJ)
Saturday 11 December
Sunday 12 December

If it's midweek, the following Wednesdays suggest themselves....

Wednesday 24 November 2004
Wednesday 1 December 2004
Wednesday 8 December 2004

I'm inclined to go for the Hollybush in Redbourne.
I'm sure there are others suitable (and thanks for the suggestions).
Perhaps we can try one of them for the NEXT meeting?

So....
Feedback welcome.
What do you think?

I agree, it would be a shame if arch-scloncher Andy couldn't enjoy the sclonchmungousness of the occasion.

But Andy, would a Friday night be OK for you? You did say you were tied up Mon-Thursday till 8pm, but you didn't mention Friday. Perhaps Friday would be easier than Sat or Sun for other sclonchers? (It probably is for me, the way things are shaping up.)

Perhaps the best way forward would be for Andy to say which dates he is definitely available in Nov/Dec, and take it from there.

As for the dates JtJ has suggested, I'll have to check the diary which isn't to hand at present for the weekends - some weekends are better than others, but the midweek dates are all OK (I think). However, I think we should wait for Andy's response before we do anything else - over to you, Andy!

Cheers

Hi fellow sclonching candidates,

Having checked with the keeper of the diary, I find the following:

Available dates at the moment:

Tues 23/11
Mon 29/11 - Sat 4/12 inclusive
Mon 6/12 - Fri 10/12 inclusive
Mon 13/12 - Fri 20/12 inclusive

(I say "at the moment" because things like Christmas events are bound to start coming up soon - so the sooner we can fix a date the better, as far as I'm concerned!)

Your old pal,

Secret

Hi Sclonch

Gosh - how flattering to be a sine qua non thingy - though I'm certain it's unjustifiable really!

Well, I've consulted The Boss and it seems I might be allowed out to play on the the following dates (all inclusive):

November: Friday 19th to Sunday 21st
November: Friday 26th to Sunday 28th
December: Friday 10th to Sunday 12th

[isn't it good when everything lines up like that!]

I could bring some bits and pieces from my little Atkin Museum, if you like - I think MoM has seen most of them, and JtJ some, but if other Sclonchmen may like to be distracted for a few moments by one or two rare Midvodian artefacts...?

Just tell me where to go (most people do!) and when.

Looking forward to it.

Andy

We can make any of the dates Andy suggests except for Friday 19th.

We'd prefer Friday 26th or 10th followed by Saturday 27th or 11th.

Title: Schlonch Date?
Post by JtJ on 16.11.04 at 12:22
Hi there!

It would appear that the best date for everyone is....

Friday 26 November 2004.
(At time of writing, this is the Friday after next).

May I suggest you put this date in your diaries (before we wait for objections, if any)?

More details of the venue (and how to find it) soon.

But now....

....a pause for reaction (if any).

Following up my own objection, I've had a look at the dates everyone has said they're available/not available and the only possible day that seems to suit everyone is...

FX: envelope being opened, pause, expectant hush

Now - is there anyone here that can't make that date? If not, I propose we go for that.

Cheers

As for the noshing, is booking advisable? Should we book a restaurant table of size n (where n=number of noshers)? I don't know how busy it is likely to be. Should we book a table in the pub for n+m (where m=number of non-noshers)? Does anyone who knows the pub know whether booking is necessary/desirable/possible? Any thoughts folks?

I'd guess that booking is pretty much de rigeur if we want a table on a Friday night two weeks before Xmas. JtJ, are you okay to arrange this? I'd book for n+4 where n is the number of eaters identified on the forum thus far, cos there're bound to be some last-minute arrivals.

As to m (per Secret Drinker), I'd assume that we don't need a table per se - if indeed one is bookable for non-eaters.

Sadly, my attendance is looking distinctly iffy, to say the least.  A hastily arranged meeting means that I shan't be home until 7:15 at the earliest and it's then a matter of 30 minutes [again, at least] to the pub.  If the meeting over-runs, it'll only make matters worse.

Unless the meeting gets cancelled, in which case wild horses couldn't...etc,  consider me an unexpected bonus if I turn up.

Any suggestions appreciated.
Otherwise I'll have to take on one of the 118 merchants at £5 a minute.   :o

Anyway....
What I need to tell them is that a group of around 6-9 people want a table to eat at 7.30pm next Friday, 10 December.  If anyone else can get through, perhaps you'd pass the message.

Thanks for doing that, Colin.
They must have known it was me!   ;)

And I had this plan to book it under the name of "M Voice" too.
Just for fun.   ;D

Still....
All done now.

Looking forward to it immensely already.

:P
