No deep sworn vow by us
was ever worn away.
No fighting and no fuss,
chance made a holiday
into a dream we shared.
No heart strings tugged or frayed.

Life never interfered
nor drug its feet of clay.
A modicum of tears
spared any need to say
however much we cared,
neither cared to stay.

Yesterday near dusk
I passed along the pier
and stopped for nothing but
to watch day disappear,
then turning, felt you there
although you’ve been gone for years.
