Title: The Paper Wing Song
Post by S J Birkill on Today at 20:14
Unable to get to the Pheasantry (http://www.peteatkin.com/cgi-bin/mv/YaBB.cgi?board=App;action=display;num=1478428636;start=0#0) last night to see Pete with Simon Wallace, I revisited the soundtrack of 1997's Monyash Festival, held in what was then my 'back yard' in Derbyshire. One of the night's highlights was the surprise guest appearance of Julie Covington, who sang four songs for us, accompanied by Pete.

The quality of her voice was truly astounding, considering that she had been absent from public performance for many years, and had had only a brief rehearsal that very afternoon. 'The Paper Wing Song' is itself remarkable for having both its lyric, and uniquely its melody, attributed to Clive James. Pete's keyboard accompaniment brought out new emotion in the song, adding a swell and a key-change absent from the 1967 arrangement, which had appeared on the Cambridge Footlights 'souvenir' album 'While The Music Lasts'. Listen to Julie's exquisite singing, 30 years on from the original.

Steve
