Title: 2005 tour set lists (Warning!!!!)
Post by Pete Atkin on Today at 11:26
For the record, interest (if any), and what it's worth, I'm going to post set lists -- or at any rate gig-to-gig variations, if any -- in this thread, so if you're coming to any of the gigs and would rather not know what we're likely to be doing, please don't scroll down any further.

Equally, if anyone wants to post any comments which might be in danger of having a similar spoiler effect, this might be the place to add them.

Hence the presence of what I hope will be enough blank lines below

All the best

Pete

OK, you can open them now

I'm intrigued to know why Pete and Clive saw fit to drop this verse.

<< stanza 3 of Prince of Aquitaine, now recast as a middle eight, a complete euphemism >>

I hope someone's taping all this illegally for the benefit of those of us who won't be able to get there! Does Pete play a solo between the middle eight and the last verse? If not, how does he modulate from D to E (IIRC)?

Ian C

(IIRC stands for If I Remember Correctly not I, Ian Ralph Chippett.)

Clive has recently discovered that 'Kolyma' does not in fact rhyme with 'dreamer', which knowledge makes the distortion a sore thumb;  that and the fact that the 'dreamer' line was pretty much manufactured in order to get it (Kolyma) in, in such a way that its sense and construction breaks from the pattern and the physical sense of the other three opening lines.  Without that stanza, I can't help but agree that the song is clearer and cleaner.

And I've re-jigged the timing (but not the tune or the harmonies) of Prince of Aquitaine, and rewritten the music of the third ('highway lights') stanza (having switched it with the 'continental terminal' stanza), and at Wavendon I completely forgot what I'd done with the last line and how I got back into the last verse.  The switch was a little, um musically abrupt.

One of the (many) pleasures at Sevenoaks was to hear The Last Hill, first read as a poem by Clive and then sung by Pete.

I'm very glad I heard this before the cut - as the problematic verse has always been a favourite - the striking Persians / Iwo Jima mismatch and then the hard-to-forget "denounced ... because his mother was a Jew" line.

I think I'd just accept the mispron. as an Anglicisation of the name and keep it.

Can anyone think of even one contemporary lyricist who would have hesitated before rhyming "dreamer" with "Kolyma?" This kind of fastidiousness has disappeared since the days of Gershwin, Rogers and Hart etc when even the most notorious hack stuck to certain basic rules and explains why current standards of songwriting craftsmanship are so low.

On the other hand, "mouth" and "Earth" slipped through the net...    ;)

Way back there in my Clivolatrous period, I used to assume that the bathetic rhyme was an ironic device for puncturing the pretension in the very act of publishing it.  In vaguely similar vein, it occurred to me to wonder whether "to even..." might not be a stitch deliberately dropped for finer eyes to fault.  I still think both are possibilities, though the first perhaps rather more likely than the second.

No modulation, he played all the verses in C, even the Birnam Wood to Dunsinane verse (perhaps top G#s are more difficult when you're sitting down?)

MUSIC HALL, SHREWSBURY
Thursday 6 October

As Wavendon, except that Clive read "Portrait of a Man Writing" in place of "After the Storm".

Gratifyingly brisk sales both of the 'Live In Australia' CDs and 'The Meaning of Recognition'

Great night at Shrewsbury .  Drove 55 miles to get there.  Met the Deity walking the streets, presumably before the gig.  Pity the hall wasn't fuller but the age range was even more surprizing that when he was at Lichfield over two years ago.

Pete & Clive seemed to be having a good time, but Pete, was it something other than water in the bottle, or are we all just getting older and the little grey cells not working as well?

Still good gig.

Having managed to come up with excuses for not attending various FODs / SODs and previous tour gigs ("too far away", "important family events"etc. etc.) Pete & Clive finally came up with an unavoidable date and venue at Lowestoft last night...  I hadn't seen Pete since the 70's, and although I've got copies of the Lakeside Sessions and Winter Spring I've remained stuck in the past, favouring the original albums which were so big a part of my late teens / early twenties.  So, I found myself a bit anxious, sitting with unconverted wife, amongst a bunch of strangers in the delightful Marina Theatre. Would the old stuff be dismissed? Would I have to listen to loads of songs I  wasn't familiar with? Would it be the same with Clive there??

Needn't have worried of course! It was a superb evening, plenty of familiar songs (Last Hill That Shows You All The Valley, Carnations on the Roof, Screen Freak amongst others), some great if less familiar ones (including Empty Table). The evening flew by. Clive's introductions and his readings were spot-on, sometimes very touching and emotional, often so funny that all in the audience were in stitches.

It seems that Pete and the material has matured along with those of us who were fans in the 70s - perhaps back then I wouldn't have an enjoyed an evening like this quite so much as I did yesterday. In the queue for signatures I stood with my CD of AKAN with a guy who'd brought his vinyl copy to be signed - both agreeing that the old albums are still the best, but I for one ready to give the new ones another good airing.

I left with wife pretty much converted, agreeing that it was a wonderfully entertaining evening. But Pete...   that shirt?

Clive's "bird" poem (was it 'This Is No Drill'?) made me think of some lines of T S Eliot, from 'Sweeney Among the Nightingales':

The nightingales are singing near
The convent of the Sacred Heart,

And sang within the bloody wood
When Agamemnon cried aloud
And let their liquid siftings fall
To stain the stiff dishonoured shroud.

Drove 135 miles to attend at the Marina Theatre in Lowestoft and thoroughly enjoyed the show. Pete was in excellent voice and Clive's poem about his father was very moving. My wife is now a confirmed Pete Atkin fan, and I'm now working on my daughter who is most impressed that I have shaken hands with the star of the new Wallace and Gromit movie. Best wishes for the rest of the tour - don't leave it too much longer before you play in the midlands (Brinklow December 2000 was the last time I think..).

Thanks for the update, Pete. If anyone's having trouble keeping track of all the changes, there's a full setlist for the Maltings (and hence for the other gigs above) at the end of my Maltings review (http://www.peteatkin.com/maltings.htm) (kindly posted by Steve on Smash Flops the other day).

Cheers

Paul

p.s. when did Rain-Wheels get dropped from the first set? I've just realised Pete hasn't mentioned it being dropped, and it wasn't included at The Maltings

Um, right.   Yes, I see I didn't include this change anywhere.  I'm pretty certain that the Lowry was either the last place Rain-Wheels was included or the first place it was dropped.  Sorry, can't be more specific than that.  Rock'n'roll or what?   Maybe what.
