Whatever you do, don't forget to put the subject line in before you try to post a message.

I just did that after spending some time preparing a posting, only to get a screen telling me the subject is required. Neither the "back" link on that screen nor the brower's Back button would get me back to the text I'd painstakingly typed in  Angry Cry

Just thought I'd warn others who might make the same mistake. Steve, I don't know if there's anything than can be done to prevent this happening? Missing the subject shouldn't be punished so severely, IMO!

From now on I'll have to do what I used to do with Yahoo! groups and generate the text offline, then paste it into the browser screen.

Hi Paul

I know that if I'm logged in and I click the 'back' button, it logs me out. I have to go back using the headers. I think it's an IE thing. Not sure if that's your problem but it sounds related.

The need for a subject line when starting a new thread is indeed a forum requirement, but I think the loss of previous form input when using the <back> button is a function of MSIE. I suspect it's Micro$oft's obsession with security which disallows reversion in Web forms -- Carole gets it all the time with Internet Explorer, whereas I can usually go back without problems in Opera or Netscape -- Steve

Hi Steve and Carole

Thanks for the replies. Smiley

I am indeed using IE. I was careful to click on the "back" link from the error page first - that led me to a blank message input screen. I then tried using the IE "Back" button (twice) in the hope of recovering my text, but sadly got the same result  Cry

I just thought I'd better warn others that forgetting the subject line (fairly ceasily done but usually recoverable) might be rather harshly punished as it was in my case Sad

Any road up - that's another step towards my JMV badge Wink

Cheers

Just tried Opera. It works fine, doesn't log me out and offers me the option of using the 'Wand' which means I don't have to type username and password more than the first time. Much better!

I've been an Opera fan for a year or two now. Apart from its ease of use and relative speed cp with MSIE, it's far less prone to virus attack and consequently one isn't spending half one's time downloading patches for it. Only downside as I see it is the odd website that doesn't like it, so I keep the Evil Empire's browser for backup purposes.

I use Netscape (well, Mozilla) as well as IE but I've never tried Opera - I think you used to have to pay for it, which is why I never bothered. Is there a free version these days?

I've just downloaded Opera and I like it - it'll show me pages that Microsoft IE6 just sulks over.

However.... there is an option to import your favourites from IE6, which I've done, but I can't find them anywhere on the Opera page. Can any Opera user tell me where I should look?

Oh, incidentally, I hate ads so I've sprung for the full monty - cost of USD 45.

And now, having rebooted, registered with Opera I find..... it's sulking over the pages it happily loaded at first during the free download. Can any techies out there help me (I know this is not at all Midvodian, but it's driving me nuts). We're off on the Saga Pearl tomorrow (yes, we are that old) and the site:

http://www.saga.co.uk/travel/Cruises3/crLifeOnBoard.asp?noparam=&sel=1&bhcp=1

has many panoramic photos of the ship. Which don't load with IE yet did when when I first loaded Opera and now don't having rebooted. Any ideas what is going wrong?

Well, I'm taking the iPod, iTrip and Tivoli PAL on the boat, so I can summon up the entire oevre in our steerage cabin - is that a bit more MV-ish?

Sounds like an issue with plug-ins to me. There are various fancy modes of display which some Websites use, which require download of a specific program for that purpose. The site prompts you to download the application if it doesn't find it, and the installation process attaches it as a 'plug-in' to your browser. Change to an exciting new browser and all is well until that old familiar plug-in is needed and, whoa! -- it isn't there. It's attached only to the 'old' browser. In some cases the only way out of this is to seek out the plug-in and download it in the new browser.

Re-starting your PC after installing software sets the program's file associations to where it thinks they should be, the idea being to enable features rather than disable them. Sounds like this went wrong -- not an unusual occurrence in Windows.

Perhaps Snoopy has a less vague answer, a solution even, on this one? Possibly too on the earlier query about Favourites/Bookmarks?

Regarding the Saga site, I can't see anything in the source code that would show panoramas!  Certainly I get nothing in IE, Opera or Mozilla.  Given the large number of broken links on the site (activities, evening entertainment and deck plans all don't exist) and the fact that there is nothing in the code that would obviously display a panorama, I have to place the blame on Saga!

Moving on to bookmarks/favourites, mine appeared in a folder called 'Internet Explorer Favorites', accessible through the 'bookmarks' menu.  If this is not there for you, you can manually force the import by doing the following:

Open the Bookmarks menu and choose Manage Bookmarks.

Choose the category you would like the IE bookmarks to appear in on the left (I'd recommend 'Personal Bar')

Click the Import... button at the bottom right, and choose 'Internet Explorer'.

Navigate to the folder 'C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Favorites'

Click OK.

You should now have access to your IE favourites.

Also, please feel free to post non MV-related techie questions in here - I may not be able to answer them, but I'll have a go!
