Hi Chorus There is an almost geological stratification to the piles of paper on this desk. The other evening I was waiting for a Google Earth page to load (we've not got broadband but do have OneSpeed which makes GE a reasonable proposition) and was idly prospecting among the layers carbon-dated to the 2001-3 era. I came across a print-out of MVs names taken from the 'old' website. I must have used it for some 'official' purpose because it's strewn with ticks and crosses. Anyway, I glanced through the list and ... my eyeballs screeched to a halt and bells rang. I checked that Wristwatch wasn't playing in Windows Media and looked again. There, in Times New Roman, was a name which I'd typed into my prison library terminal only the day before. I can't tell you what it is (else I'd have to pulverise this PC) but I reasoned that there couldn't be many around who possess it. So I sent my Inmate Orderly out on a secret mission - to track this person down and to deliver the message: 'Burned books left over from the rally await in the library'. At worst, Mr. X could only punch the messenger in the gob. As it happened, for once my instinct was right. There is indeed one of our number currently enjoying a rest in one of The Regina Group's most opulent hotels. He high-tailed it to see me very shortly after receiving the code. Our mutual discovery should really have been filmed. He sends his regards to all -- not that that's of much use given his anonymity! -- and I'm looking forward to updating him on (to him) recent developments. I'll start with Lakeside, I think, when his CD player arrives at the weekend. Cheers Andy

What a great story, Andy! And what a diverse group we MVs are. Now let's see: phony dough? hot car? matricide? female vocalist found dead in nightclub (pianist apprehended)? a hitman (solo or otherwise)? Keith

Delightful story Andy! This must be the most extraordinary chance encounter between two MVs throughout human history. In fact any such chance encounter is a pretty unlikely event. I wonder from time to time what's become of some of the more prolific contributors to discussions in former years who have since fallen silent, but have never considered this eventuality. Well, Mr X is in for a treat or two thanks to you Andy. And surely he's been wrongfully convicted? Regards to the both of you. Avner

Indeed it was a wonderful story Andy. Even better when I worked out what you meant. Me, slow? Never. Murray.

Crikey! A story and a mystery worthy of a Clive James lyric! So,if I understand correctly, we have a (former) MV in prison. But who,and what for? Clues so far seem to be that he was on MV lists for 2001-3.That his name isn't all that common. That it is a he. More confusingly (to me) is that he needs updating from Lakeside. My copy is dated 2001.Has he been inside since then..? if so it is a pretty (worryingly) serious matter.. and an analysis of the forum might narrow the field ... And Andy preserves his anonymity, despite the good wishes from anonymous individual.I take this to be a matter of discretion/confidentiality by Andy (or a term of his employment contract)The fact that someone has been imprisoned is normally a matter of public record so what's the problem with disclosure...? Doubtless there is a sad story behind this but i can't resist delving deeper.. Andrew Long (busily posting after a long silence so as to eliminate himself from the list of suspects...)

As I've been lurking a long time - just to say - it ain't me babe (sorry - quotes wrong songwriter). Andy will be bound by confidentiality - it's an implied term of any employment contract - but I'll be surprised if the Home Office hasn't put it in explicitly. Being sent to Prison is a matter of public record, but an individual prisoner's whereabouts in the system, as well as personal information about him/her, should presumably remain anonymous. Andy, am I right, or am I left? (as the BFG would say). Don't think we should dig any more on this one, personally. Jeremy Pymer Thankfully free in Fowlmere, South Cambs.

Hi Chorus Jeremy wrote: "Andy will be bound by confidentiality..." Spot on, Jeremy! I had to be careful not to give out clues in my original tale and didn't risk a reply to Andrew's posting for that reason. Actually, I was looking for an excuse to post an update... LS is still grazing in the same field -- happily he didn't lamb this year -- and now has a very cushy little number working in one of the Prison Managers' offices. As a result, said Prison Manager is now a confirmed PA convert and, interestingly, has been asking whether he could download some songs to his IPod. LS has now caught up with all the recorded PA material which he missed and I've been printing out Pete's newsletters for him, so he's reasonably up to date. So this week I awarded him his MV badge. He has it mounted proudly on his fleece and is kept busy attempting to explain it to all who ask! A. PS: I was deperate to work in a pun about 'life behind baas' but, as you see, I failed. Bit early in the day, I think!

Andy wrote about the converted Prison Manager - there must be a PA/CJ song in there somewhere (about the manager I mean, not LS). Would they take this up as a challenge, akin to John Betjeman's "Verses Turned in aid of A Public Subscription (1952) Towards the Restoration of the Church of St Katherine, Chiselhampton, Oxon" - or any of Andrew Motion's official stuff? I could certainly imagine a select institution for some of the characters they have created in the songs Glad to know the lost sheep's been found - and hope this doesn't just apply to MV. Hi Chorus I have some news about Lost Sheep: I checked the livestock inventory today and noticed that LS was no longer listed as enjoying grazing rights. An inspection of his paddock proved it. I hadn't time today to discover what has happened to him but I want to put your minds at rest. Chorus: it's really very unlikely that the Nasty Farmer has sent him to ... well, you know. OK? Even so, will all meat-eating MVs please check their Sunday roasts for the next few weeks and report immediately signs that any have been precooked by invisible fire? It's more likely that - if not right now then very soon - he'll be in a position to read these messages for himself. Though not necessarily to reply. So ... Welcome back to the fold, LS !! A.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/execution/readings/texas.html There are many legal and cultural explanations for why Texas executes far more people than any other state and is doing so at a pace that has no parallel in the modern era of the death penalty in the U.S. What follows is a summary of the analyses. ..... Texas does not have a public defender system for indigent defendants, and instead relies upon court-appointed lawyers who likely do not have experience in capital murder defenses or appeals.

The incredible/scary bit comes just after that : Newton notes that incompetent defenses in capital murder cases are legion in Texas, and that, even in a death penalty appeal, bad lawyering is hard to prove. One decision, which turned down a defendant's habeas appeal due to bad lawyering, concluded that "[t]he Constitution does not say that the lawyer has to be awake" during trial proceedings. !! Nedd
