Flowers And The Wine / Les Mis

I accompanied a young lady who sang On My Own from Les Miserables, recently. I was struck with the similarity of the allusion to the 'River' in one of the verses of that song to the river in The Flowers And The Wine.
"when clouds black out the moon that moves the tides
what tells you there's a river in the dark
except the street light on the other side"
"I love him but when the night is over
He is gone, the river's just a river
(Without him the world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers")
Both songs are of regret, sorrow and lost love. Both hint at transience and passing, of unspoken love. Seems to me that the river is the metaphor in both cases.
By the way, a sailor friend (fnaar fnaar) of mine recently told me that the sun was a far greater factor in the movement of the tides that the moon. Apparently, even the planets can have a significant effect, especially when in alignment.
