Clive wrote an article for this early 70s rock periodical, on Sandy Denny's singing and songwriting. There's a flawed copy on the Web which I've taken and tidied up for our delight. I've grouped the link with Clive's 'Cream' articles on Smash Flops. Or find it here.

Very interesting piece by John Harris. I well remember the unsurpassed Liege and Lief, especially the utterly wonderful singing of the much-missed Sandy Denny, from my days as a folk-singer. (This was decades before I became a trained Valkyrie !!)

This is getting a bit off-topic, but I can't resist jumping in, because Liege and Lief was one of the major events in my musical life.
Having been mightily impressed with Fairport's Unhalfbricking album (I still love it today) a bunch of us went to see them at the Fairfield Hall in Croydon. Though we'd heard them do traditional stuff before (Nottamun Town and She Moved Through the Fair on What We Did On Our Holidays, and the monumental A Sailor's Life on Unhalfbricking), a solid evening of amplified British folk music came as quite a surprise. This, of course, was the stuff that was released a month or so later as Liege and Lief.
Up until then my interest in folk music was negligible, and my knowledge of it limited to a vague concept somewhere between that stuff you had to do at school, Lonnie Donegan, Peter Paul and Mary, and Joan Baez (none of whom did anything much for me), but this concert blew me away, and kindled an interest in and liking for folk music that has continued to this day.
Incidentally, and even further off-topic (may I be forgiven!), only this morning I found a clip on YouTube of Fairport at Cropredy in 1987 performing the aforementioned A Sailor's Life with Richard Thompson on guitar and the utterly superb June Tabor guesting on vocals. My enthusiasm for this lady may be familiar to some of you. Listen to her singing on this and be awed!

Liege & Lief is a 1969 electric folk album by Fairport Convention which established British folk-rock as a distinct and influential genre. It would be voted the 'Best Folk Album Ever' by BBC Radio 2 listeners in 2002, and 'Most Influential Folk Album Of All Time' by public vote for the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2006. "Liege and Lief" means "loyal and ready" in Middle English. It reached number 17 in the UK album charts.

As a long-standing June Tabor fan I was pretty shocked by this and simply had to turn the sound down on the vocal sections - she was unbelievably bad on this (words I never thought I'd write about any of her performances!). I can only assume that she fell into the trap of trying to imitate Sandy Denny's vocals. RT was, however, as always, awesome.
