In case anyone's wondering about the Chinese ideograms featured in the calligraphy pane of Simon's video, here's a more complete explanation (from my post in the Facebook group The Pete Atkin and Clive James Appreciation Society on May 28th).
The inscription reads, in Japanese, 'Aikido', which is the name of a modern Japanese martial art.
The three kanji (assimilated Chinese characters) carry the same meanings as in Chinese:
 | - Japanese ai - Pinyin hé - close, unite, join (v); |  | - Japanese ki - Pinyin qì - air, spirit, life force (n); |  | - Japanese do - Pinyin dào - way, path, road (n). |
(The third character is incomplete in the above still from the video).
So, in universal mystic poetic/exotic-sounding oriental-speak the meaning can be rendered as 'The Path of Unifying Energy'. Or something.

I just wanted to add a note of thanks; I am really enjoying the lockdown series. The ingenuity is admirable but also some of the different treatments of old favourites are a delight. And I haven’t yet descended to the lockdown routine of trying to read the titles of books on the shelves in the background!
Biro came beautifully timed for me. I had just been reading a review in an old London Review of Books (passed on to me by the intellectual in the family) about ( amongst others) Renoir. The reviewed book doubted whether he had the brush actually tied into his hands as a consequence of diminished dexterity. Instead it suggested that he might have had wooden slats strapped to the back of his wrists on which material could be transferred to the background scenes. It was great , decades on from hearing the words, finally to understand the reference....

An eponym for the ballpoint pen, a combination of a ball-and-socket delivery system with an ink of the appropriate (pasty) consistency, perfected and patented by the Hungarian László Bíró in 1938 and later manufactured by his company. There was a trend for adopting catchy brand names as generic at the time -- think Hoover for a vacuum-cleaner in the UK, or Band-Aid for a sticking-plaster in the US, or (later) Teflon, Jacuzzi, Skidoo (there are many more) -- and the brand-name Biro became for a while the commonly recognised term for a ballpoint pen in Britain. However by the 1960s most of us were using products from Parker (retractable, reloadable) or Bic (disposable), and by the 1990s the fibre-tip product had mostly displaced the ballpoint. I never owned a Biro. But 'Biro' scans, and it trips featly off the tongue. Try singing 'Have you got a ballpoint (or pen, paint-brush, Bic, etc.) I can borrow...
